A top-notch movie theater, in other words, that could launch art films into the great ’burbs beyond, via Dolan’s cable channels and video-on-demand. “The directive was, Make it IFC’s Radio City,” says Sehring. It’s owned by IFC Entertainment (the IFC network, IFC Films), which is a subsidiary of Rainbow Media (AMC channel, MSG), which is a subsidiary of Cablevision-which owns the Knicks and the Clearview Cinemas chain that let the Waverly lapse into disrepair in the first place. The IFC Center isn’t that independent, of course. ![]() “This was really the vision of Jim Dolan, the CEO of Cablevision,” says Sehring-not the first thing you’d expect to hear about an art house. Upstairs, there are two film-editing suites next door is a restaurant serving “Welsh rarebit, artisan Lancashire, double-smoked rashers.” In the lobby, downtown’s Posteritati gallery will exhibit vintage posters, while the concession stand serves “organic popcorn with rosemary butter.” The Waverly’s drop-ceiling has been ripped away to expose the vaulted, 50-plus-foot ceiling of a church, originally built in 1831. The cinema’s largest theater will be one of New York’s most impressive, with exposed brick and violet ambient lighting. Inside, there are three theaters (210, 110, and 65 seats)-with great sight lines, big, comfy chairs (“imported from France!”), and high-definition digital projection. Phantoms first saw action on August 6, 1964, when five F4-B’s of VF-142 and VF-143 off the U.S.S. They later performed flak suppression in the Wild Weasel role. It was so versatile that it quickly became a multi-role fighter, serving in Vietnam as air defense, air superiority, and escort fighters as well as fighter-bombers in battlefield and deep interdiction missions. Phantoms flew for 11 nations: Australia, Greece, Iran, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Spain, West Germany, Great Britain, Turkey, and the United States.ĭuring its service life the Phantom saw combat in the Middle East and more extensively in Southeast Asia. Over the next 25 years, a total of 17 different variants among 5,200 aircraft followed, including the gun-equipped F-4E and the Wild Weasel series. The first operational Phantoms, designated F-4B, entered service with the Navy and Marine Corps on Ma– even before the completion of the test program in November. The Navy, in conjunction with McDonnell, embarked on a rigorous flight test program over the next three years. It was also the first aircraft able to independently detect, intercept and destroy any target that came within radar range – other fighters of the day still needed help from surface radar units. The Phantom II was the first aircraft to make extensive use of titanium (in its keel, aft fuselage skin, engine shrouds, and part of the internal fuselage structure). Poetic justice was dispensed in that the Phantom II beat out several contenders, including an advanced version of the Crusader, the F8U-3. The end result was the Navy’s Decemannouncement that the F4H-1, as the initial prototype was designated, had been selected as its first all-weather fighter. With its two General Electric J-79 turbojets, the F-4’s amazing performance set world records for altitude (98,537 ft. Early flight tests exceeded expectations as it reached Mach 1.01 acceleration and climb-rate figures also surpassed their goals. It took its maiden flight on May 27, 1958, and from the outset, the F-4 was a thoroughbred. The McDonnell (and after 1967, McDonnell-Douglas) F-4 Phantom II was perhaps the most famous, certainly among the most recognized, jet fighters in the world in the latter half of the 20th Century. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Skat fish![]() ![]() To shake hands "greet or salute by grasping one another's hands" dates from 1530s. The verb also was used in Middle English as "evade" responsibility, etc. ![]() 1200 the modern colloquial use for "get rid of, cast off, abandon" (by 1872, American English) is likely a new extension on the notion of "throw off by a jolting or abrupt action," perhaps with horses in mind. on the notion of "make unstable." The meaning "rid oneself of by abrupt twists" is from c. The meaning "weaken, impair" in any respect is from late 14c. in reference to mixing ingredients, etc., by shaking a container. The meaning "seize and shake" (someone or something else) is from early 14c. There are said to be no certain cognates outside Germanic, but some sources suggest a PIE root *(s)keg- "to jump, to move" (compare Sanskrit khaj "to agitate, churn, stir about," Old Church Slavonic skoku "a leap, bound," Welsh ysgogi "move"). This is reconstructed to be from Proto-Germanic *skakanan "to shake, swing," also "to escape" (source also of Old Norse, Swedish skaka, Danish skage "to shift, turn, veer"). Middle English shaken, from Old English sceacan "move (something) quickly to and fro, cause to move with quick vibrations brandish move the body or a part of it rapidly back and forth " also "go, glide, hasten, flee, depart" (as in sceacdom "flight") also intransitive, of persons or parts of the body, "to tremble" especially from fever, cold, fear (class VI strong verb past tense scoc, past participle scacen). A slightly older word for an ice skate was scrick-shoe (1650s), from Middle Dutch scricschoe, from schricken "to slide." The meaning "an act of skating" is from 1853. ![]() The sense in English was extended to roller-skates by 1876. The latter theory perhaps is supported by evidence that the original ice skates, up to medieval times, were leg bones of horse, ox, or deer, strapped to the feet with leather strips. If the former, the sense alteration in Dutch from "stilt" to "skate" is not clearly traced. Or perhaps the Dutch word is connected to Middle Low German schenke, Old English scanca "leg" (see shank). The Dutch word is perhaps from Old North French escache "a stilt, trestle," related to Old French eschace "stilt" (French échasse), from Frankish *skakkja "stilt" or a similar Germanic source (compare Frisian skatja "stilt"), perhaps literally "thing that shakes or moves fast" and related to root of Old English sceacan "to vibrate" (see shake (v.)). The word and the custom were brought to England after the Restoration by exiled followers of Charles II who had taken refuge in Holland. "an ice-skate, a contrivance for enabling a person to glide swiftly on ice," 1660s, skeates (plural), from Dutch schaats (plural schaatsen), a singular mistaken in English for plural, from Middle Dutch schaetse. ![]() |
